Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. Her aunt was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay learned that art is a great tool to engage in activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma and decided to make a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get attracted to the field of production for television journalism. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish in the house that belonged to a member on the jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed she decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. In this role, she launched her own PR company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful. Her name is associated with a well-known actress who has appeared in American Experience (1987), A More Perfect Union (2009) along with other films.
